It`s still there, the good old stuff: "Good Old Music" ist the title of the long time anticipated second album of Swimmingpool alias Michael Scheibenreiter und Stefan Schwander.
A good four years have passed since the producers from Düsseldorf landed their debut-coup, club-hit inclusive, and with "Dub`n`Bass" casually invented - according to Kompakt-authority Tobias Thomas - a new genre.
An ennoblement that fortunately didn`t lead to stagnancy or a sell-out of their trademark sound, but even more strengthened their ambitions and was a motivation for the complex live realization of their versatile tracks.
Everything clear in the disco:
Numerous intensive club-gigs then paved the way to "Good Old Music" and brought them very close to dancefloor, which is a well known area for them because they both had and still have a reputation as experienced and well versed dancemusic producers. Michael Scheibenreiter indeed used to be responsible for the warm-up part in the Phoneheads-DJ-Sets, but now successfully played himself into peak time and - as drum&bass producer - always has been in the service of dance.
And about Stefan "discomachine" Schwander there is not much left to say: he has already been working for a long time on his very own concept of a disco-universe - with his band-project "The Bad Examples", as "Antonelli electr.", "Repeat Orchestra" or "Rhythm_maker."
About differences and flow velocities:
Swimmingpool are two completely different artists which - in a miraculous way - manage to successfully merge their very different musical characters. The diverse musical backgrounds may have been a subject on the first album, but "Good Old Music" is featured by audible and sensible homogeneity. Now they know each others strong points and soft spots and there`s nothing more to prove. They just seem to have become more experienced, more self-confident and more determined. And beyond that Scheibenreiter und Schwander were especially ready for one thing: ready to flow. During the production of the album they realized very quickly that they would not succeed with any plans or concepts, that they had to rely on their experience, their intuition and on the magic moments inside the studio: the flow!
In the mood for Swimmingpool
And then fortunately, this flow appeared again and again and, at the end of last year, a maxi with the tracks "Black Barry" und "Carpet Sweeper" were its first result. An impressive reporting-back and a promise at the same time. A promise that now is being kept with the album "Good Old Music". At once its back again, this typical Swimmingpool mood: easy, clear und uplifting. These typical sounds and sound-fragments, augmented with micro-musical set pieces, a guitar-lick here, a piano-hook there. A quotation - just before it becomes one. The strings are new and they are welcome, also when they`re plucked. The basses dry and funky, as if they were played by Bernard Edwards himself. And the whole thing embedded into a solid, softly powerful bassdrum.
Brand new: Good Old Music:
Today more than ever, the music of Swimmingpool is closely linked to the long and versatile musical biographies of its producers. On "Good Old Music" they`ve got the space of an whole album to show their remarkable musical skills which, without difficulty, create an urban-impressed mixture of melodies, harmonies and atmospheres - with its legs standing on a floor made out of coloured, shiny squares. Even the first track ("Chic Plaza") needs only 30 seconds to reach that shiny floor: a perfect opener and a signpost at the same time. Almost every track on "Good Old Music" fits on the well-assorted dancefloor on which it is allowed to take a little breath of techno ("Last Night"). Even during midtempo ("Carbono"), propulsion and determination are noticeable. It would have been absolutely okay to let the album die away on ambient minor chords ("Soul Made Pling"), but it`s also absolutely okay that the beats have the final say and a hidden track ("Dark Horse Twinkles") marks the end - full of mysterious beauty and profound contentment.
