Wiley has largely been credited as being one of the founding members of the UK’s grime scene. With the slow demise of drum ‘n’ bass and fluctuating form of garage, grime bounced into the gaping hole in the hearts and minds of Britain’s urban youth. Break neck two step beats rattled over low, menacing bass lines and scatter gun MCing. With attitude aplenty, the council estates had found their sound track. Wiley- real name Richard Cowie - grew up in Bow in East London and often goes by the name of Eski Boy after an alternative name for his music; Eski. Cowie then released solo album Treadin’ on Thin Ice in 2004 on XL records. Originally operating with the Pay As You Go cartel, he soon jumped ship to found the Roll Deep crew. This led to the 2005 album In At The Deep End. Now the media began to take note of grimey rumblings and Wiley was being lauded as the brains behind it all. Fast forward to 2007 and Wiley’s second solo album, Playtime is Over has arrived with Jay Z esque muses of retirement. Just like Jigga, Cowie retracted this notion as quickly as it was served. Grime, it seems, is in his blood.
As its title suggests, Playtime is Over (released on Big Dada records) is largely about Wiley re-laying down his own gauntlet. He angles this album right in the listeners face from the outset and keeps it there to the close. Whilst it’s certainly not a classic, it’s not an unpleasant ride either. 50/50 opens with a crunching grime break and tuba bass framing Eski’s skittering flow. Then follows the inevitable shout out to Bow E3 wrapped around a glossy string hook and spongy elastic bass. Wiley has a decent storytelling ability matched with a good degree of honesty. Slippin’ is a good example, or ballad to his newborn daughter on Baby Girl; ‘She might be a nurse or a vet, but I’ll knock that off because music’s best,’ he raps. Equally on the message to his former prodigy, Letter 2 Dizee, Wiley muses that he’s almost 30 now and its time to grow up (one of the reasons given for his ‘retirement’). Elsewhere, Gangsters doesn’t lie with a scoping bass ranging over a menacing break. Then Wiley shouts out to himself on Eski Boy before the looping gangster grime title track closes proceedings. He’s undoubtedly the father of grime, but maybe even Wiley is wondering how much steam the scene has left. Playtime is Over, as decent as it is, will certainly not prove its defining moment.
