The brand new project from the unbeleivably good Sixtoo is launched, expanding and reaching out beyond it's deep confines to engulf a new audience, expectant of good things from a label that is yet to put a foot wrong. In fact, this is going to be a big year for Vertical Form, launching itself into new terrain and doing so with the usual perceptive approach to many genres, all sharing a common thread of innovation and beauty. Montreal's Sixtoo is perhaps the most cinematically inclined operator amongst the troops within the wide-reaching Anticon family of artists, and he is quite simply on fire at the moment. His 'Duration' album was an incredible instrumental document touching on new styles of hip hop expression through the use of live instruments, sitting nicely next to Boom Bip's 'Seed To Sun' with its expansion of boundaries and definitions in the field. With this new release, Sixtoo has found himself a perfect home. 'Outremont...' is a powerful downbeat masterpiece - lights out in the studio styles, with a microphone in front of a broken mirror proclaiming 'who stole the soulless?'. The use of Multi-layered vocals makes for the same kind of dark and twisted accentuation that has made Sole and Sixtoo's Sebutone partner Buck 65 so addictive these last couple of years, and even as rhythmically rich and purposeful as early Rakim. The deep reverberated hip hop beat flows underneath a beautifully melancholic vibraphone and reduced sheen hit-hat with Sixtoo's lightly rough vocals echoed back via a megaphone held reflection. After the killer instrumental comes 'Cup Of Tea', Sixtoo reflecting on the awkwardness of forced conversation, the atmosphere darkended with a repeating hushed alarm tone ringing out in your brain while the drums kick large, a cracked saxophone bringing things to a pensive end. 'Transfer Please, Perfect Tomorrow', however, steals the show with its stop-start drums flowing behind a delicate guitar melody and a descending rhodes piano motif, traffic passing by in the middle distance. This is absolutely essential stuff from one of the most exciting beat scientists around on one of the most exciting and consistently excellent labels we know. Awesome.
