"Useless Wooden Toys" is Jon Kennedy’s second Grand Central album, after the acclaimed debut ‘Take My Drum To England’.
Sure to astound many, the album displays a well-timed coming of age. On ‘Useless Wooden Toys’ Jon played the Contra Bass, Bongos, Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Piano, Harmonica and his beloved drums as well as providing most of the vocals. He created instruments out of tree trunks and experimented with small lumps of clay dropped into a Djembe (an African drum). Also on the album Bernard Moss (Aim live, Pork Recordings) played the flute on ‘You, You and You’ and Sarah Scott (Jon’s live vocalist) sang vocal harmonies on ‘Lodestar’.
‘Useless Wooden Toys’ is influenced by the music and production of Debussy, The Soft Machine, Jimi Hendrix (“always Hendrix”), DJ Shadow, Chuck Mangione, Tommy Guerrero, Howlin’ Wolf, Pete Rock, Caveman and Rage Against The Machine, amongst others. The album itself has many different musical flavours, from Breakbeat and Psychedelic to Bossa Nova and Dub.
