With a name like the Dub Trio, you could be forgiven for thinking of the juddery, resonant, spongy echoes typical of that Jamaican-derived genre. But they’re on Mike Patton’s Ipecac label and, sure enough, this New York instrumental three-piece (who’ve played with Patton’s Peeping Tom, 50 Cent and Matisyahu) do dub differently. This third studio set opens with a gnarly blast of heavy metallic guitar and has weighty riffs bearing down on you for most of this hour-long effort. But dub techniques clearly inform these tracks too, most obviously on the spacious, trippy shudders of Martyr Dub but also in the foundations of cuts like Jog On and Bay Vs. Leonard. It may seem like some contradiction, then, for the band to swing back into some seriously meatgrinder guitar for Regression Line and Felicitation but somehow it all makes sonic sense (anyway it’s not the first time this kind of amalgam has paid off – remember The Bad Brains?). With only one, creepy but charged vocal (Mike Patton on his second sortie with the band in No Flag), Dub Trio can be challenging but worth the trip.
